A DROP OF SHAMPOO IN THE EYE... AND ANIMAL TESTING
So I was getting ready to wash my hair the other day, and when I popped open the shampoo bottle, a drop jumped and fell in my right eye. This was an undiluted drop, not just soapy water. I felt excruciating pain; my eye immediately started stinging sharply, watering profusely, reddening violently. I had that gritty feeling you get when you have an eye abrasion, and my eyelid got very swollen. I flushed it with water (it hurt A LOT); then I flushed it with two types of eye drops (it hurt EVEN MORE); finally, I used an eye ointment (it was PURE AGONY). I continued hurting through the night; it felt better the next day, but it took me a couple of days to slowly get back to normal. Now, this was a natural shampoo with some organic ingredients, and just one drop caused all that damage in my eye!
This incident brought something to mind immediately after it happened, as I was doing damage control and dealing with the pain. It made me think of all the poor animals (namely bunnies) who, at this day and age, still have such products (and much worse) forcefully put in their eyes or on their skin for testing. Unfortunately, too many major companies continue to perform painfully cruel types of animal testing, although no U.S. law requires that cosmetics and household products be tested on animals! In addition, there are plenty of alternative tests available which are more accurate and cost effective, and don’t involve torturing defenseless animals. See below for more on animal testing, as well as a list of companies that still use cruel testing methods. You can also search PETA’s database for companies that have banned product testing on animals, and order a free copy of PETA’s Cruelty-Free Shopping Guide. Also, learn all about PETA's Beauty Without Bunnies Program.
